Developer Mathieu Demange has introduced a very interesting plug-in. The RX950 is an emulation of the entire AD/DA conversion of the classic AKAI S950 sampler, known for its fat and crunchy 12-bit sound.

A piece of kit that hip-hop and electronica producers are likely going to love, as the S950 can be found all over 90s records in these genres!

The developer claims RX950 offers perfect modeling of the S950’s audio signal path, the replica being the result of a year’s worth of studying the original unit. The steep 6th-order low-pass Butterworth filter is emulated as well.

The plug-in supports Stereo and Mono operation and has the following controls: Input Gain, Audio Bandwidth, Filter, Output Level, and the Mono/Stereo button. Input Gain overdrives the converter for warmth and grit. The Audio Bandwidth knob modifies the sample rate and adds that signature aliasing to your audio. The Filter knob controls the low-pass filter, which can be used on pretty much anything — including mix buses or the Master section.

Price & availability

RX950 is available in 32- and 64-bit VST and AU plug-in format for Windows and Mac computers. It can also be installed as a rack extension for Reason 7.1 and later. The price is an affordable USD 19 / EUR 19.

If you really want 12 bit conversion, just under-record everything 72dB lower through your 24 bit converters so your peaks are -72dBFS and voila: 12 bit conversion!
