Roland GO:MIXER PRO and Virtual Stage Camera: a video recording studio for smartphones
Roland has released a new tool to help modern content creators that use their smartphone to capture video but struggle with sound quality. It’s the combination of its GO:MIXER PRO smartphone audio mixer and the Virtual Stage Camera app, an integrated solution for creating high quality video.
With GO:MIXER PRO, content creators can connect and mix up to nine audio sources simultaneously – including powered microphones and musical instruments like guitars and synthesizers. The device, which looks simple to operate, has dedicated volume controls for easy adjustment and the stereo digital audio output is sent into your preferred recording app over USB or Lightning. The mixer is powered either by your smartphone or from four AAA batteries.
As expected, there’s also a headphone output with level control for monitoring the audio being sent to your smartphone or listening to a backing audio track during your performance. A Loop Back panel switch allows you to send the backing audio to the sound capture app along with the live audio inputs. There’s also a Center Cancel function that lets you come up with karaoke-style tracks.
As for the free Virtual Stage Camera app, it’s capable of interesting tricks like removing the background from your video in real time and replacing it with other footage or stills stored on the smartphone. It can also produce a blue or green background for further manipulation in a more powerful video editing app. The mixer is also compatible with Roland’s free 4XCAMERA video app which is designed for easy creation of split-screen music videos that can be shared online, enabling collaboration. The apps are iOS-only for the moment, though.
Overall, GO:MIXER PRO and the app make for an interesting and convenient combination; we don’t know of a similar solution that’s this portable. The aim here is to turn your smartphone into a complete recording studio, although multi-track recording isn’t possible. Still, there are other, more complex and bulkier audio interfaces for smartphones, such as the Sound Dеvices MixPre-10M hybrid USB audio interface and mobile recorder that could handle your multi-track recording needs.
Roland hasn’t announced the pricing for GO:MIXER PRO, so check in with your local dealer about that.
