Known primarily for his badass softsynths, plug-in guru Rob Papen presents MasterMagic – a mastering processor which is completely different from Rob’s usual output. But since it carries Rob Papen’s signature on it, I’ll gladly take it!

Operating MasterMagic couldn’t be easier. The plug-in should be placed as the last instance in your mastering chain. In the middle sits a large knob which you should turn in a clockwise direction… and then, as they say, magic happens! The sound gets brighter, the stereo image widens, and the mix is perceived as louder. Clearly, there are some clever algorithms on duty behind the plug-in’s unassuming appearance. I like to call this type of plug-in a time-saver. And time is the most precious, yet easily wasted thing we have. So thanks for putting out this one, Rob!

If you’re more experienced in mastering, you may find the frequency splits appealing, or the ability to adjust the frequency band for the EQ. There are a bunch of presets included to get you started, although with such a simple interface to operate, they are of somewhat questionable use.

Price and release details

MasterMagic costs a reasonable EUR 39 in Rob Papen’s cybershop. The plug-in is also part of the upcoming eXplorer 5 Bundle. eXplorer 4 owners will get the upgrade for free, while all other owners of one or more Rob Papen products can buy or update at discounted prices which aren’t fixed yet. The plug-in runs on Mac OSX 10.6 or higher and Windows Vista or higher as an AU, VST and AAX in 32 or 64-bit. An unrestricted demo version for 30 days is also available for download on the website.
