Universal Audio Volt Gen 2 and Volt Max: An Overhaul for the Budget Interface Range
An update that breathes new life into the popular Volt series.
Introducing the Universal Audio Volt Gen 2 and Volt Max, a range of six new audio interfaces equipped with new recording features to enhance your home studio.
The new Volt audio interfaces have been created by the same team that built the popular Apollo series, so we can expect an intuitive workflow made possible by intelligent features that allow even beginners to dive headlong into the recording process and never look back.

Each of the six new Volt interfaces is capable of 32-bit 192 kHz recording and compatible with all major DAW systems across Mac, Windows, iPad, and iPhone devices. While the compact and portable 2×2 Volt 1 Gen 2 provides the basic means to connect your mic, guitar, speakers, and headphones, the other five models in the series have a few additional features.
The new Smart Displays on these five models are probably the first thing you’ll notice as an obvious design upgrade. This gives you immediate readings of input and gain-reduction levels while recording, so you can ensure your settings are exactly where you want them. As with most of the newer-generation budget interfaces on the market, there are also enhancements like Auto-Gain and Clip Protection.
This allows you to quickly set up and optimize gain structure for any recording situation, without having to ever worry about clipping. Also, on every model in the series, you’ll see a tone button on the front panel. This gives you access to three different tone-shaping preamp emulations, including Warmth (Tube), Focus (Solid State), and Shine (British Class-A).
Meanwhile, the three Volt Max models have six built-in dynamics modes, with settings inspired by classics like the 1176, LA-2A, and VCA-style compressors. In addition, the Volt 4 Gen 2 and Volt Max models have MIDI I/O for your electronic instruments, and they are ADAT-equipped, so you can upgrade the input stage with a multichannel external preamp to take on more expansive recording projects.

What’s the thing with the missing separate gain knobs on so many desktop audio interfaces nowadays? Common encoder is surely a welcome thing when portability is important but on a desktop unit? Nah..
