Periphery guitarist Mark Holcomb has just got a new PRS SE model. It has some of the nicer features of his limited edition USA PRS Core signature model from last year, but is offered here at a much lower price point.

Low and tight

The guitar has a quilted maple veneer on a mahogany body. The neck is a PRS thin and wide pattern made from maple and has a 25.5″ scale length. The fretboard has a 20″ radius ebony fingerboard with 24 frets and the back of the neck is finished in a matte finish, just like the original PRS Core model. Tuned to Drop C and designed with this in mind, the maple neck and ebony board should in theory help keep the guitar tone tight.

New Bridge

The guitar has a new PRS-designed bridge finished in black chrome, which has apparently been created to suit Mark’s playing style. The rest of the hardware comes with matching black chrome finish as well. The guitar is strung through the body and over the new bridge with the aim of achieving better sustain and tuning stability.

Alpha & Omega Pickups

The instrument features a set of the Seymour Duncan Alpha and Omega humbuckers that were used in the far more expensive limited edition PRS Core model.  They are controlled by a three-way blade pickup selector switch, with a push/pull tone knob for coil-splitting them as well.

Judging by the marketing material, it sounds like you get a lot for your money. I like the fact that PRS have managed to include Seymour Duncan pickups and carried over a lot of the key features of the original USA built guitar. You also get one of those really nice PRS SE gig bags included in the price. I really like these myself and use them frequently to get my guitars to and from gigs.

Periphery

Are you a fan of the band Periphery? Or do you just want a good-quality, modern-style hard tail guitar? Either way, I think these are worth going to try out. I own a few PRS and SE models and yes, the USA ones are very nice. But in my own experience, the SE models I own or have tried are usually great guitars for a lot less money.
