According to David Grissom during an interview with Five Watt World, he is in talks with Paul Reed Smith about the release of a PRS DGT SE model. The video entitled ‘Guitar or Amp: Where to Spend Your Money, with special guest David Grissom!’ lets the cat out of the bag. But how long will it take for an actual release?

Everything that we already knew has been confirmed and they should start appearing at PRS dealers around the world. Though, I suspect these will be popular and you may want to pre-order them if you want one this year, as the waiting times are quite high.

Both are available for pre-order from our partner Thomann from the links below.

Thankfully, it will now be a lot easier to find a DGT Goldtop with Moon inlays.

“I didn’t just rubber stamp this. This guitar is something I have been very involved in and am really proud of. The SE Series is lightyears ahead of anything I could get my hands on when I started playing – it’s amazing how far the quality has come – and I am proud to be able to offer this guitar to more people,” – David Grissom

UPDATE 08/12/22

PRS just dropped this new video confirming the new PRS DGT SE model. It is Part 1 of three videos that will chart how this guitar came into being.

“When we first decided to bring the DGT to the SE Series, I knew it would be a complicated project involving a lot of people. At the same time, I knew how beloved that guitar is and that we had the team to pull it off.”

“I wanted these videos to showcase the process of product development in general and working with David in particular. We are excited to give the world a behind-the-scenes view of what we do.” –  Jack Higginbotham, PRS Guitars COO

2023

The guitar is officially due out in January 2023 and we will keep you up to date as more information becomes available. For now, you can watch the official PRS video below.

PRS DGT SE?

During the interview with Five Watt World, David Grissom said that he and PRS are “having that conversation right now” regarding an SE version of the DGT. This could potentially be a huge seller for PRS, as its Core US DGT model is one of the company’s most popular models among guitarists all over the world.

The DGT is based on the McCarty platform with a unique DGT neck shape, taller frets, special pickups, and a revised control layout. Grissom and Paul spent a year A/B-ing more than forty sets of pickups before nailing the vintage-voice of DGT humbuckers.

DGT Specifications

The current PRS DGT is a pretty amazing guitar and has very specific specifications. This includes a pair of PRS DGT pickups wired with two volume controls with a Push/Pull tone control and a three-way toggle switch.

They also have a fairly meaty DGT neck profile and 22 tall frets. Normally, they ship with Moon inlays, rather than the PRS Birds, though you can opt for the Birds as a special order if you wish.

I own a PRS DGT myself and it is a beautiful guitar. And as I like plain finishes, I went for an Antique White model. But there are lots of fancy 10 tops in this range as well. Hopefully, we will see some of these features on an SE model, if it ever makes it out into the real world.

When?

Since the PRS Silver Sky SE John Mayer model was released just recently, I do think we may well see a PRS DGT SE model. It would make perfect sense, as so many PRS players love this particular model.

You have to wait right until the end of the Five Watt World video below to hear Grissom confirm that he is in talks about this potential new model, so the rumour comes straight from the horse’s mouth.

However, we could wait sometime before we see an actual production model, as both Paul Reed Smith and David Grissom are perfectionists, and they would both need to sign off on this one.

I think I’d rather save up and get an american core prs dgt. You never know what compromises will be made.

I think PRS SE models are pretty well made these days. I own a Core DGT and it is nice, and I also own a SE Singlecut and it is also really well made. Is one worth the extra cash for being Core? YMMV, I think both are decent guitars, and offer players plenty of good tones, plus great playability.

Core models are always better than their respective SE model, but you can know EXACTLY what is different about them. Read the specs and maybe play them? Then it is up to you to decide if the Core version is $3000 to $4000 better.

Sounds really interesting. I will order one to try out…

That’s a ridiculous price considering that the “gold top” looks very poor.

For half the price you can get a Sire Larry Carlton.

Here in the UK, I had one on order (the goldtop) from February 2023. I received one in March, and sent it back due to a bad and very obvious wood knot in the binding. Despite promises from the online dealer I am still waiting for a replacement and it is now the middle of May. I have also noticed other examples of shocking lack of quality control popping up in the internet. They’re supposed to be all shipped to PRS in the US for ‘final QC’ !! I feel conned by marketing guff.
