Manufacturer Peluso takes on the Neumann U47 again with its new P-47 SS microphone. It replaces the tube stage of the Peluso 2247 with solid-state FET technology. This makes it possible to reduce the background noise, distortion level, and price. But the sound will inevitably change.

The new Peluso P-47 SS microphone has a 34 mm capsule and is still based on the U47 design. However, an FET (field-effect transistor)-based circuit replaces the vacuum tube stage. According to the manufacturer, this results in a comparatively cleaner sound – which is better is for you to decide. Regardless, the microphone should faithfully reproduce most of what makes the U47 great – such as the wide dynamic range and sensitivity to subtle details. Peluso says vocal and guitar recordings benefit from the microphone’s quick transient response.

The mic’s polar pattern is switchable between cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure eight. The dual-diaphragm condenser capsule provides a bell-shaped proximity effect which produces enhanced bass frequencies. This may be valuable if you are after that radio host sound. If not, increase your distance from the microphone or use the 75dB pad switch.

With the P-47 SS, Peluso is not necessarily reinventing the wheel, but it offers what seems to be a solid take on the Berlin classic.
