While we’ve seen plenty of acrylic kits from different drum makers over the years, the PDP Concept Acrylic drum kit and snare take it up a notch. Here, it’s not only the shell that’s made of acryl, but the hoops, too! PDP says, this isn’t just done for visual purposes, but these sound different as well.
Acrylic Drums: No Plastic Beats
See-through shells have had quite a history in acoustic drums. First in foremost, it’s the looks. Having an acrylic drum kit on stage is just a very different eye-catcher. Plus, you can’t hide behind them as well as you can behind monstrous wood shell drums!
PDP is no stranger to these types of drums, too. Just in 2024, when the sister company to DW celebrated its anniversary, they released their Anniversary Edition acrylic drums. Here, they already went into unknown territory by combining plastic shells with walnut-stained hoops. With the PDP Concept Acrylic series, they’re upping the ante.
PDP Concept Acrylic: See Through it all
Because with these drums, it’s not just the shells that are see-through, but the hoops, too. PDP claims they’re the first to do that. And just visually speaking, this makes for a whole other level of “Am I seeing what I’m seeing?!” visual excitement.
For the PDP Concept Acrylic, you get two hoop sizes, 1-inch for snare and toms, 2-inch for the bass drum. But this isn’t just a visual icing on the cake. The drum maker says that due to the different material, rim shots will sound that much more massive.
4-shell kit and A Snare
There are two new releases in the PDP Concept Acrylic series: a 14″ x 6.5″ snare drum and a drum kit comprising a 22″ x 16″ bass drum and three toms (10″ x 7″, 12″ x 8″, and 16″ x 16″). The snare features all-chrome hardware, True-Pitch tuning screws, a PDPMAG snare strainer, and vintage-style claw hooks.
The 4-piece drum kit comes with all-chrome hardware, True-Pitch tuning screws, and vintage-style claw hooks, too. For the tom mount, a PDP STM mount is included, along with stainless-steel floor tom legs. Imagine these made from plastic as well; it would be like a hovering, almost invincible drum kit!
Price and availability
Both the PDP Concept Acrylic snare drum and the drum kit are available to order now. Thomann has them ready in about four to five weeks.
