The NT05 is a lo-fi rhythm box, and the NTSH is a funky little noise synth. Both feature console-style joysticks and look like a lot of fun.

NT05

I’ve not come across Noystoise before, but these boxes look like a complete riot. The NT05 is a compact little rhythm machine that generates lo-fi beats and responds to manipulation. It combines two voices; one is a sine wave, and the other is a noise generator. So you get a kick and a snare, or at least something approaching that kind of idea.

The Sine voice has VCA, distortion and pitch controls. You can bend the waveform from triangle to sine to square wave. It can be modulated from the LFO, a pad envelope and the Sine Pattern bank. It’s the LFO that gets all the fun joystick action. You’ve got a bit of decay control, and the idea is to get stuck in with the knobs to find your thump.

The Noise voice has the same sort of options but without the distortion circuit. It uses an “LFSR” type pseudo-random noise generator. You have a bit of length control over the LFSR to mess about with the harmonic content.

The NT05 patterns come from two banks. There are eight two-channel, 16-step rhythms to choose from. These are selected with the touchpads. Each one has a pad roll element to discover, and the box seems to work by pushing these rhythms at each other while fooling around with the controls. It’s all wonderfully weird and instantly gratifying.

NTSH

This is a tiny thing that goes for joystick control over everything all at once. It has a white noise generator and a square wave oscillator. This is dominated by a 12dB resonant low-pass filter and messed about with a Sample & Hold circuit and an envelope.

The left joystick controls the pitch and filter on whatever you’ve got selected as the source. The right joystick handles the modulation. So with a pair of thumbs, you can set the whole lot into party mode.

Both these boxes look completely brilliant to me. They are undoubtedly exciting machines of instant satisfaction and endless fiddling.
