Midweek Modular: Triple Steeple, vintage emulators and big fat tubes

This week Shakmat has released their Triple Steeple 3-channel envelope, Sovage has some vintage tone to add to your patch and Orpho keeps warm with a vacuum VCO.
We saw something quite interesting in the delay market with the VENO-ECHO. As well as giving you two mono channels or a combined stereo delay, Venus Instruments has packed in many characterful features. You can saturate, down-sample, filter, reverse and crossfade. Read more about it here.

Here are the bits and bobs of modular and related gear that caught my eye this week.
Shakmat Triple Steeple
We first saw this module at Superbooth earlier in the year, and now the Triple Steeple is ready to ship. It’s a three-channel envelope generator with control over time and symmetry. There are five different modes which include triggered, gated, looped, gated loop and clocked loop.
What’s not immediately obvious is that each knob is an envelope. It looks like a 3-stage ADR or ASR envelope when actually, they are individually triggered and have individual outputs. You can push the shape around with the symmetry knob, which controls the ratio between Attack and Decay. It’s quite brilliant and very controllable.

Sovage Engineering modulators and utilities
Sovage released a nice bunch of noise-munching modules back in September. Now the range is being bolstered with some cool utilities, modulation and a fascinating vintage gear emulator.
The utilities consist of a Multiple, a Mixer/Inverter/Mult and a rather nice Mixer with distortion called Méleé. For modulation, we saw the Ambianceurs Quad VC-LFO before, but now there seems to be a very similar Paresseux. It looks almost identical, and I’m unsure how they differ in terms of operation. The Teinte Analogue Vintage Audio Recording Emulator is the most interesting of the bunch. It has a simple input and output and aims to recreate the tones of some vintage preamps, mics and speakers. There are two switches with three modes each. You can select Dark, Bright or Focus for Vintage, Lo-Fi or Broken. In either case, it sounds good and meaty. Check it out:

Orpho Orpheus Vacuum Tube VCO
If you like your waveforms warm and your tubes to stand a couple of inches proud of the faceplate, then the Orpheus Vacuum Tube VCO is for you. Built on two NOS HF pentodes of type 6SH1P it has a fat, gooey sound that after about 15 minutes will become relatively stable. The output is something approaching a square wave, which you can modulate while the Reshape knob ruins everything.

Noisy Fruits Lab 4CHANc2
4CHANc2 looks like a mixer, but it’s actually a 4-channel fader bank and voltage source. Each channel is separate and if you plug something in, either CV or audio, the fader becomes an attenuator. If you leave it unpatched, it will generate a steady voltage relative to the fader position.
Good, simple and useful stuff that’s enhanced by a vactrol based clickless mute. With a switch, you can stop doing the thing you were using the fader for.
