This week’s Midweek Modular introduces us to the Idein and Klima sensor trigger modules, Spdf, Xport and Mimix connectivity modules and the BRAP SY1.

But first, we were roaring at the news of the return of muSonics, the Tandy brand of synthesizer that also owned Moog for a while back in the 1970s. In a fabulously presented bit of marketing, STG Soundlabs has stated that they’ve been taken over by the muSonics brand and will now be known as STG muSonics. You can read more about it and its new Moog Modular module here.

Here are the most interesting modular bits and pieces that I’ve come across this week.

FKMG Idein, Klima and Kiel

These are all about sensors and environmental interactions.

Idein is an optic gate and trigger generator based around that whopping eye of a sensor that stares unblinking at you from the front panel. It uses an RGB-IR light sensor to harvest certain light colours and triggers once a threshold is met. A gate also opens or closes when the threshold is passed. It works completely by itself, although you can affect the outcomes by getting yourself in the way of the all-seeing eye.

Klima is a logic module that compares a user signal to information from atmospheric sensors. The sensors look at temperature, humidity, air pressure and altitude. A density knob control how likely it is that a gate will occur at each of the outputs.

And finally, we have Kiel, which is an expander module for either the Idein or Klima that will generate random stepped voltages from the gates being generated.

I haven’t explained any of that very well, but the video is fascinating.

Bored Brain Music Spdf, Xport and Mimix

Bored Brain has added three new connectivity modules to its lineup; Spdf, Xport and Mimix.

Spdf is a S/PDIF digital converter module that will take a digital signal into your Eurorack and convert it into two channels of analogue or the other way around. It’s DC Coupled and can handle both audio and CV, working at 44.1kHz or 48kHz for internal or external sync.

Xport is a serious looking six channel Eurorack-to-balanced line level output module. Each Eurorack input gets a signal and peak LED and outputs as a balanced TRS jack.

Mimix is a buffered mult and unity mixer with some quirks. You have one mult that’s 1-to-4 but with the 4th output inverted. Another mult has the 4th output rectified. And then you have a 4-to-1 unity mixer normalled to the two multiples.

Subconscious Communications BRAP SY1

The BRAP SY1 is a long-awaited dual-channel percussion synth that finally got its release a couple of days ago. Within minutes all 50 units sold out. Another run of 200 is planned, but it’s been very difficult to find the parts, which is why it’s taken a couple of years just to get the first 50 made.

The BRAP SY1 is a homage to the Pearl Syl. Each channel has two digitally generated sine wave oscillators arranged like a complex oscillator with a VCO and modulation oscillator. It has 6 modes of operation which change the relationship between the oscillators. From there, you can route the signal into an analogue low-pass filter and VCA. There is built-in modulation from an LFO, Sample & Hold and Voltage Sweep.

It’s designed as a very hands-on machine with plenty of control and patch points for further exploration. Hopefully, we’ll see some more.
