Limited Edition SP-404 Faceplate for 808 Day

Happy 808 Day to all who celebrate – and if you’re here reading this story, there’s a very good chance that you do. In case you don’t know (and are tired of acting like you do), 808 Day is August 8, a day to celebrate the lasting cultural legacy of Roland’s TR-808 drum machine.

Every year, Roland does something special, and as this year is the 45th anniversary of the debut of the analog drum machine, the company has quite a bit going on.

First up is this limited edition SP-404 faceplate, an 808-themed design given away for free to those who purchase Roland’s also very popular SP-404MKII. The caveat, though, is that you have to be in Japan to do it; Tokyo to be exact. The offer is only good at the Roland Store Tokyo in trendy Harajuku on August 8. And it’s strictly limited edition. Once the SP-404 faceplates are gone, that’s it.

New Balance Collaboration

Last year, Roland announced a collaboration with New Balance on the 808-inspired Tiago Lemos NM808 shoes. This year, the two companies are re-releasing the kick kicks, this time with the iconic 808 colors splashed across the NB logo on the side instead of the basic black like last time.

The Tiago Lemos NM808 x Roland sneakers will be available starting on August 8 at 9 am EDT for $114.99 on New Balance’s site.

The Rhythm Creators

The TR-808 is more than just a drum machine; it’s a cultural legacy. To celebrate this, Roland has teamed up with Detroit-based artist Vaughn Taormina to make a series of animated shorts called The Rhythm Creators. Each of the eight videos will focus on an artist that’s made use of the 808 (and 909, apparently), such as the Egyptian Lover, the first one featured. Future installments will star Prince Paul, Fatboy Slim, Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B, and more. These will roll out through September.

Roland Stores

Along with the limited edition SP-404 faceplate, which I already mentioned, the Roland Store Tokyo will also be offering an XLARGE x 808 capsule collection of clothes for purchase. The collection will include graphic T-shirts, hoodies, and accessories that “fuse XLARGE’s signature streetwear aesthetic with Roland’s iconic 808 design language,” according to Roland.

The clothes will also be on sale at the Roland Store London plus online as well.

Additionally, both stores will feature live music from artists like Yebisu303 and REMO-CON in Tokyo, and DJ Complexion in London.

TR-808 Software Rhythm Composer on Sale

Additionally, Roland will be selling the TR-808 Software Rhythm Composer in the Roland Cloud for $49 until 909 Day (that is, September 9). You can also download a sound pack of patterns and sequences made by Los Angeles hip-hop legend Arabian Prince.

Roland drum machines are available at Thomann*.
