UltraVox (which, to our knowledge, doesn’t have anything to do with the band of the same name) comes with a pretty, modern-looking GUI with just a handful of controls. That doesn’t mean that the underlying engine isn’t complex, though. The plug-in boasts four core elements of a typical vocal processing chain, in one convenient plug-in and with simplified controls. The idea is to help you craft great vocals quickly, without having to set up your own processing chain and fiddle with the controls of several plug-ins. Leapwing says that UltraVox works on any type of vocal.

First is a compressor for keeping the dynamics in check. The soft-knee compressor automatically adjusts the attack and release times depending on the material. The only control is a threshold slider. The same goes for the gate, which also offers automatic, program-dependent envelope times and helps to eliminate room noise and mic bleed.

The Harmonics module adds 2nd and 3rd order harmonics, thereby giving the vocal a polished character. The final module is Air, which is an equalizer focused around 12 kHz. By boosting or attenuating this band, you can control the high frequencies and make your vocals shine without introducing harshness, Leapwing says.

All in all, UltraVox is like having four independent, vocal-optimized one-knob processors in one plug-in. It’s all framed by a pair of input and output level sliders and meters. The large level visualizer in the center provides a visual representation of the compression and gating.

Price and compatibility

Leapwing UltraVox is now available for an introductory price of €41/$47/£35. This offer is good through December 6, 2021. The regular price will be €69/$79/£59. A 30-day trial is available.

The plug-in runs on macOS 10.13 or higher and Windows 8 and 10 in VST, VST3, AU and AAX formats (64 bit).
