Photos and some specs of Oberheim’s return to the game have emerged on internet forums and we are losing our minds over the OB-X8.

OB-X8

All this is unofficial and it’s quite difficult tracking down the origin of the information. But it seems to come from the Swedish forum 99Musik, but it’s also on Sequencer.de and Gearspace.com. Soon to be everywhere, I imagine.

We knew it was a synth and many people had speculated that it was going to be some kind of OB-X evolution. Looks like they were right. We don’t actually get a good look at the instrument itself, just a slightly grumpy looking Tom Oberheim contemplating which idiot leaked his baby onto the internet.

However, the unofficial list of specs which looks like they’ve come from an online store tells us that the OB-X8 is an 8-voice analogue synthesizer with 5 waveforms. Each voice has two VCOs and these are based on a lineage of discrete SEM/OB-X designs to give it that classic, punchy Oberheim tone. The VCFs also come from the SEM with additional modes, alongside some genuine Curtis filters to add OB-Xa and OB-8 character. The envelopes are designed to match each OB model.

The beautiful looking synth comes with a 61-key Fatar keyboard with channel aftertouch and check out those walnut end cheeks. The synth is bi-timbral letting you play two presets at once for splits or layers. It will come with 400 presets that include all the factory sounds from the OB-X, OB-SX, OB-Xa and OB-8. There’s a Vintage knob that’s presumably come from the Prophet-5 reissue to dial in deliciously bad behaviour. An OLED screen will help deal with all the clever stuff.

The reported price is $5,000 which puts it close to the Sequential Prophet-10.

The OB-X8 looks amazing! As soon as we get the full details we’ll let you know.

Well, if that is the price, they can keep it

Nice to see and I hope they do well 👍

I still won’t be able to afford it though but it does now seem there is a category of new synths emerging which will only be in the hands of the elite again. That’s not a complaint by the way; I think part of what makes certain instruments so desirable, almost ‘mystical’, is when they’re priced beyond mere mortal like myself. I could probably stretch to something under 2 grand if I actually really wanted it, but 5 G’s ? Unattainable!! Can’t hide that kind of expense from the Mrs !

I wonder if it will get final assembly in San Francisco courtesy of Dave Smith’s crew or be completely fabricated in China (where very good Novation stuff gets made.) I love my sE mics and Hydrasynth but I love to see made in S.F. U.S.A. on an analogue. Hmmm.

or “made in Asheville, N.C.” I’m kind of provincial that way I guess.

‘Made’ and ‘assembled’ have different meanings and repercussions. Moog just values their CHN-made components less than what these are really worth, in order to qualify for having their products labeled as being ‘made’ in the US, as the majority of ‘value’ is created there.

    Accountants / cheaters my ass.

Guesses here: since Sequential has assembly as well as local chassis production, it looks like it could be based on the Prophet 5/10 61 key chassis looking at the heights in the back of each. From there aesthetic and of course panel and electronics changes. Construction from Calif looks likely especially at that price.

    $5,000 ?
    Good luck with that…

This looks just fantastic – a “best-of” Obie design iterations over the years.

Back when I was a kid I could not afford an Oberheim, and there will certainly be folks who can’t afford this. Happily for them there are other options available. To my mind this price is exactly in line with what a quality instrument from the 1908’s would have cost, adjusted for inflation while benefiting from advances in technology and manufacturing.

It looks delicious and I can’t wait to learn more about it and hear more of it.

Congratulations Mr. Oberheim – “Welcome Back” indeed!

      Edit: 1980’S !!
Synths from the 1908’s are CRAZY expensive on Reverb these days!

Thumbs up. It’s worth the investment. And down the line it will be most desirable. Thank you and godbless you Dave Smith for giving it the new age technology and letting Tom do his job. All the original sounds of the entire ob series. Having owned an ob8 later in life and now owning a new obx8 let the doubters believe what they want I respect there opinions. I also respect the obx8. This is the pinochle of a true beast.

Obx8 plain and simple. The very best of the ob series. These are all original sounds from the ob series. Having owned an ob8 and now owning an obx8 I can humble myself and say the truth. Tom oberheim scorched the earth with this one. Leaving his mark forever.
