I always appreciate a straightforward approach to sequencing in Eurorack. While multiple channels and fancy modulations can be awesome I get a lot of enjoyment out of the simple knob-per-step interface of a single sequence. The S-316 opens that up into a wide 22HP module with plenty of space for knob-twiddling and performance-friendly controls.

Each of the 16 steps has a knob for setting the CV of the step and a switch to turn the step on or off. That’s pretty much all you need to bang out your sequence of pitch or modulation and each step also generates a Gate. The output has some range and quantisation options which will reign in some of the control that the knobs offer. It can be 5 octaves unquantised, 5 octaves quantised to semitones or bring it down to 2 octaves quantised. That really helps with keeping melodies musical.

You also have direction control over a normal cycle, pendulum or randomisation. It has some Reset modes where “1st” means that an incoming pulse at the Reset input also plays the first step, “Stay” means that the first clock after a Reset plays the first step, “Last” means that a Reset trigger moves the sequence to the last step immediately.

The S-316 is classic, visual, easy to fiddle with and you’ll always know where you are. It’s available now for £180 in silver or £190 in black.
