The KORG opsix mk2 is the latest edition of KORG’s popular 6-operator digital altered FM synthesizer, designed for the studio and stage.

The basic idea behind the original opsix was to meet all the demands of classic FM synthesis enthusiasts, while providing a completely new platform for sound creation with elements from virtual analogue and wavetable designs.

For starters, the mk2’s polyphony has been expanded, now offering 64 voices. This means it has more complex sound layering capabilities for creating more detailed sonics.

Apart from that, the features are very familiar compared to the previous model. The six operator modes include Subtractive, Semi-Modular, Analog (Modeling), Waveshaping, Additive, and Classic FM.

The 16-step pattern sequencer offers polyphonic motion sequencing capabilities. This allows you to sequence up to six notes per step, while editing velocity, gate time, and playback timing of each note.

Also, the motion sequencer allows you to automate six different parameters within each pattern, giving you the power to create vivid, animated, rhythmic sound patterns with depth and character.

In addition, the opsix mk2 offers the same extensive modulation matrix with three envelopes, three LFOs, and 12 virtual patches with a wide range of routing possibilities. Meanwhile, the 3-stage effects processing section gives you even more expression.

Overall, this release could surely have offered more features. We can only hope that future firmware updates will make better use of the new mk2’s more powerful synth engine.

64 voices is a welcome addition. putting that engine in an aftertouch keyboard would be great.

My Korg DS8 is 8 part multitimbral, and has a crunchier FM sound. It’d be great to see/ hear some multi timbral action on this , and indeed the other two synths in this troika.

just get a used modx (no aftertouch tough). the FMx engine eats the korg one for breakfast. And you have many layers to goof around with.
