In Sweden, rum doesn’t mean the alcohol favoured by pirates, but space. And since Klevgränd comes from Sweden (among the dopest plug-in developers around, hands down), its first room reverb plug-in is (unsurprisingly) called Rum. To stand out among the oh-so-many room reverbs we have kicking around, Rum simulates the spaces in which most of us actually record stuff: bedrooms, kitchens, and basements (of course). It also sports Klevgränd’s unmistakably Scandinavian sense of unobtrusive minimalism. Let’s dig in!

The Klevgränd Rum plug-in offers ten different rooms to choose from, and all of them simulate small, intimate spaces. The exact technical principles remain a trade secret, but the description implies there are impulse responses at play. This means you can switch between different microphone positions, and also adjust the characteristics of the simulated room. These include a pre-delay regulating the distance from the virtual walls. Before it “goes into the room”, the interface lets you change the input gain and adjust the high and low pass filters.

You can also edit the signal with a ducker to tame the transients of the reverb signal a little. According to the manufacturer, this makes the sound more organic. Almost at the end, you can change the effect signal using the modulation parameter Fatness (a kind of chorus) and two controls for stereo widening, of which there are three variants. The final output section lets you set the stereo width and the blend between dry and effected signal.

As expected from Klevgränd, Rum is something fresh and different, with a very nice user interface to boot. There is also a version for the iPad to take those room reverbs on the road.

Price and availability

Until September 30 2021, Rum costs USD 30, down from the normal USD 40. The plug-in works in VST, AU and AAX 64-bit formats under macOS (10.10 or newer) and Windows (7 or newer). You can also download a demo version from the manufacturer’s website. The iPad version requires a tablet running iPadOS 13.0 or later, and costs EUR 10.
