Despite its shortcomings, the JBL 3 Series has always held a special place in the hearts of budding music producers, as getting your first pair has served as a rite of passage as you build your beatmaking and mixing skills. Now in its 3rd generation, this range of affordable studio monitors has been redesigned to add even more value and continue its tradition.

While the speaker size options in the range remain the same, a lot has changed with this new MKIII upgrade. First off, the bass-reflex port has been repositioned on the front of the cabinet, which is ideal for small rooms where you might be forced to place the monitors close to walls or other surfaces. In addition, all the drivers and tweeters have been upgraded across the range.

This means cleaner highs and extended low-end response, as even the frequency response of the compact 305P MKIII goes down to 55 Hz. While the previous generation of the 3 Series was known for having an audible hissing noise floor, the MkIII range features new Class D amps that improve this considerably, along with the power and headroom of each model in the range.

The 3 Series also introduces far more advanced acoustic correction with 81 DSP presets to compensate for the shortcomings of your listening environment and any adjacent reflective obstacles. Meanwhile, the LSR310S MkIII subwoofer offers more power, with 300W of Class D amplification, extended low-end (26 Hz), and more crossover filter modes.

Although there is a slight price increase compared to the previous version, the new MkIII range seems like an improved design overall and will certainly continue the legacy of the 3 Series, with the next generation of aspiring music producers. What’s more, the M4 mounting points make these monitors install-friendly for multichannel mixing setups.
