He’s a faceless, voiceless, quiet sound design genius who beavers away, crafting factory presets and third-party sound banks for pocket money. This James Dyson is doing great work.

James Dyson, no, not the guy behind cyclonic floor cleaners and hand drying machines that, inexplicably, nobody can ever seem to use correctly, but James Dyson of Cherry Audio and Modal sound design fame, has slowly and quietly been making a name for himself. This week sees the launch of two impressive sound sets from him!

Carbonate for Modal Carbon8 by James Dyson

James Dyson has had a fair amount of input into the factory presets of the Carbon8‘s predecessors, the rather lovely Argon8 and Cobalt8, so it stands to reason that he’s been involved in the new kid on the block. And now he’s delivering a substantial additional set called ‘Carbonate’.

More Information

As usual, Mr Dyson brings the same level of quality to this pack as he does with the factory sounds and Carbonate delivers 100 of them, covering all the usual styles and genres. Big pads, tinkly arps, burbling basses… James gives you all these and more.

All of these sounds use the full potential of the Carbon8, which has had somewhat of an arduous journey towards its eventual release, what with all the shenanigans surrounding the company. But all that is well behind Modal, and they are forging ahead with the Carbon8, recently being joined by its 8X 61-key variant.

Apollo for Dreadbox Artemis by James Dyson

Next up from the ‘House of Dyson’ is a bank of sounds for the rather brilliant and lush-sounding Artemis from Dreadbox. Entitled ‘Apollo’, this sound pack includes 64 presets that make full use of the Artemis’ engine and performance capabilities.

Check out the demo below to hear how good this thing can sound. What you hear is raw Artemis, right out of the box, so to speak. What you hear is what you get! And what you get is a killer soundset for what is a really great synth.

J50 for Kodamo MASK1 by J Bowman

I wonder if the ‘J’ in J Bowman stands for James? It would be a funny coincidence, but either way, what we have here is another spectacularly good bank of sounds from one of my favourite synthesizers of the last few years, the Kodamo MASK1.

Following on from their FM monster, the EssenceFM, MASK1 went decidedly left-field with its unique bit masking synthesis method. This slim, sexy and incredibly well-built synth went out on a limb, daring to be different and definitely achieving it.

More Information

Despite some criticism about its sparse user interface and slightly baffling programming method, the MASK1 has found many fans other than myself, one of which is J Bowman, who not only makes sounds for it, but has created some great demo videos on his channel.

‘J50’ follows on from another free bank called ‘Masquerade’ and delivers 55 new presets for this unique keyboard. Just listening to the demo, you can hear the broad range of tones that the MASK1 is capable of, from basses to leads and pads, as well as drums and percussion.

I’m not sure if this bank will swing any fence-sitters into buying one of these, but I am firmly of the belief that the MASK1 will end up being one of those synths that end up exchanging hands for large sums of money in the future, such is their unique and rare nature. You can download the J50 sound bank for free, directly from the Kodamo website.

Freaky Tussinn for Arturia MiniFreak by Viral Beats

Another week and another Minifreak sound bank! Only this time, it’s a monster pack of 140 sounds from Viral Beats. The MiniFreak is an absolute cracker of a synth and, judging by the number of people using one, has to be one of Arturia’s best sellers. It’s also just been released with a white paint job and added vocoder functionality!

More Information

Its multiple, crazy, digital synth engines, combined with analog effects and a decent package of modulation routings, deliver a synth that, as I have said many times over, belies its small footprint. It has no right to sound as big as it does, but it does.

It’s fair to say that Viral Beats has a taste for the darker things in life. Check out his excellent YouTube channel for some great content. And ‘Freaky Tussinn’ delivers 140 great sounds with a very dark vibe to them. VB says that the MiniFreak is one of his favourite synths of all time and that shows with this sound set.
