COBALT8 V2

Hot on the heels of the V3 update on the ARGON8 we have V2 on the COBALT8 with an unsurprisingly similar set of features.

Vintage

The coolest feature is the new Vintage parameter which also feeds into the Oscillator Free Run. The Vintage control messes with the fabric of the virtual-analogue algorithms to introduce those little bits of weird behaviour, technical imperfections and variations inherent in vintage analogue gear. The Oscillator Free Run feature injects some further variation and realism in making sure every keypress is slightly different to the one before. So it’s all about sounding less perfect, which we seem to like.

Filters

Modal has added an astonishing 27 new filter types. This includes State Variable Filters, lowpass filters, ladder filters with all sorts of combinations, different characteristics and more. The Morph control and Drive circuit is always available on all types of filter.

There’s a new Cutoff Scaling parameter that Modal says unlocks improved filter cutoff behaviour with three distinctive modes to increase creative performance and sound design options.

Effects

The COBALT8 gets 14 new effects, but you still only have the two slots to fill. But now you have a lot more choice. The new effects include a better Reverb and Phaser, Compressor, 3-band EQ, Unisoniser, Utility and additional Drive effects.

There are also a few additional bits and pieces like different directions on the ARP, better Audio In quality and gain staging on the audio output.

The firmware update is available via the MODALapp software.
