The new J Rockett Archer Select overdrive offers 7 clipping diodes and a built-in speaker emulated DI out. This Klon-style overdrive now gives guitarists plenty of tonal variations, which could be great for studio work.

J Rockett Archer Select

This J Rockett Archer Select combines the same diode setups as their previous Archer *, iKon * and Jeff Mod Archerplus 4 additional diodes. Giving players a lot of unique choices, which you would not normally be able to access with a straight Klon-clone overdrive pedal.

Thankfully, J Rockett has plenty of previous experience making Klon-style overdrive pedals and so this one should be a good one.

Diode Controls

It has regular controls for Output, Treble and Gain. Where it differs from the previous Archer iterations, is the new rotary control selection knob. This lets users choose between 6 diodes – 5x germanium and one LED.

There are also two footswitches, one is a standard on/off switch, whilst the other engages the chosen user’s diode. If the switch is bypassed it defaults to the standard diode option instead.

DI Out Speaker Sim

This new Archer version is also the first with a dedicated DI Out on the side with speaker simulation.  The speaker simulation is based on a British 4X12 cabinet.

If you prefer to use the standard out, then it will operate as a regular overdrive pedal. Having a DI out could make this a more flexible drive effect for many players. Perfect for recording and for going straight to a PA system.

There is also a toggle switch in the middle of the controllers that activates the ground/lift for the DI output.

More Klon?

I guess that anyone who likes Klon-style “transparent” overdrives will like this one as well. Having all those diodes to choose from might be useful for studio work and session players.

Probably, a little too many options for some guitarists, but the idea behind this pedal is certainly sound and I can see some musicians loving this kind of flexibility.
