Not too long ago, Heritage Audio released the Synth Buddy, which was a switching device that allowed you to connect multiple instruments and then select which one was playing. The Mix Buddy is almost the opposite, giving you a complete, compact instrument mixer with per-channel aux sends.

Although it’s a relatively small desktop unit, roughly the size of one of the larger Elektron boxes, the Mix Buddy has an astounding 19 inputs and eight outputs, including four stereo high-gain channels and three stereo unity channels with Toshiba 2SK JFET gain buffers. On the main output stage, there is a Heritage Audio 73 active DI with custom transformers.

This allows you to choose between mic/line level, while the secondary output stage is transformerless, making it ideal for monitoring. Besides all the instrument inputs, there is also a single mic preamp channel with a JFET input stage, offering up to 70dB of gain. One of the most interesting aspects of the Mix Buddy is the effects routing capabilities.

The aux send path has its own dedicated global send and return controls, allowing you to incorporate a chain of effects pedals in mono or stereo, and there is a global mute switch for immediacy. Each of the aux sends can be set to pre- or post-fader, and the channels themselves have dual or thru modes for added flexibility.

Possibly the most exciting thing about the Mix Buddy is that the different sets of channels have been designed with specific instruments in mind. For example, the high-gain channels are well suited for passive basses as well as vintage Rhodes pianos and synths, while the unity inputs will get the best out of old-school samplers and drum machines.
