Heritage Audio Herchild Next Gen 670N: A More Affordable Fairchild
A more accessible version of the legendary tube compressor for modern applications.
The Heritage Audio Herchild Next Gen 670N is a recreation of the classic vari-mu compressor we know from some of our favourite 1960s recordings.
This time, Heritage Audio has scaled back the design to make it more accessible to home recording enthusiasts. However, the Herchild Next Gen 670N is still a formidable compressor that captures the sonic magic of the original with its program-dependent behaviour.
Heritage Audio Herchild Next Gen 670N
With the Herchild Next Gen 670N, you get similar performance to the Herchild 670, but a range of new features have been added for modern music production applications. This includes an independent channel bypass function and a more transparent makeup gain stage, which is based on the HA-880 op-amp.
There is also a range of five different sidechain filter modes, including high-pass and peak filter settings, and the six time constant attack and release settings have been updated for modern applications. Also, the progressive DC threshold has been modified to allow a more utilitarian range between transparent compression behaviour and hard limiting.
With the different sidechain filter modes, you can set the detection circuit to ignore the low frequency range or react exclusively to a narrower band like a de-esser. This is ideal for taming cymbals in your drum overhead mics, while delivering the classic cohesion that the Fairchild is known for.
With the Herchild Next Gen 670N, you get stereo and dual mono operation, but with its LAT VERT modes, you can also do mid-side processing for mixing and mastering. The different link modes allow you to apply the same processing across the mid and side channels or work with them separately, for more control.
