Heritage Audio announces the Baby RAM passive monitor controller
[26 Jun 2020] Lasse Eilers: Heritage Audio has expanded the RAM series with the new Baby RAM passive monitor controller. The Baby RAM is designed to deliver the same sound quality as its bigger siblings in a compact, all-passive package inspired by classic European consoles.

In many cases, a precise, high-quality volume control and the ability to switch between two sets of speakers is really all you need from a monitor controller. That’s where passive solutions like the Heritage Audio Baby RAM come in. Derived from the larger RAM 5000 and RAM 2000, the Baby RAM promises to deliver the same audio quality in a compact package with no extra baggage.
The manufacturer describes the Baby RAM as “the ultimate controller for total transparency” and claims that high quality was the main focus during the development. As a passive monitor controller, the features are simple, but on point. The Baby RAM offers two switchable stereo inputs and two switchable stereo outputs on gold-plated TRS jacks.
This means that you can switch between two sources and route them to two pairs of speakers. Instead of a potentiometer, the Baby RAM uses a 4-gang, 24-step rotary switch for volume control. Heritage Audio says that this ensures an accurate stereo signal in any position. It also offers Mute, Dim, and Mono buttons.

With these features, the Baby RAM is a no-nonsense, passive volume control and source/speaker switch for modern studios. It doesn’t offer many of the things typically found on monitor controllers, like headphone outputs, talkback, level meters or Bluetooth connectivity. But it promises to deliver the basic functions without compromising on quality, and it doesn’t require a power supply.
