Gullfoss is a well-loved intelligent EQ plug-in that many producers now consider essential and indispensable. I haven’t tried it myself, but the hard science behind it apparently gets results like nothing else. And now is a great time to explore its possibilities (if you haven’t already), as developer Soundtheory launched a revision of the plug-in called Gullfoss Master. It also put it on sale at a generous 30% off until the end of July.

Intelligent mastering EQ

Following the release of Gullfoss Master, Gullfoss now has three editions. The other two are Gullfoss (for mixing) and Gullfoss Live (for tracking). Master differs from the traditional Gullfoss by enabling finer parameter adjustments and optimizing the auditory model for small gain changes. The internal precision is increased and the processing noise floor is lowered. The tradeoff is higher CPU consumption – hence its use is optimal in mastering projects with lower track counts.

Gullfoss Master has the same user interface as Gullfoss, but with a brighter colour scheme. The available parameters are Recover, Tame, Bias, Brighten, and Boost. Sidechain input is available, along with a bypass button for easy comparisons. Gullfoss is the kind of EQ where you mostly let it do its thing and use the parameters to adjust how much of it you want. It’s a completely different method compared to traditional ‘static’ EQs that change one band at a time in a non-dynamic manner. A modern producer should be able to find a place for plug-ins like Gulfoss (or competutors such as soothe 2, Smooth Operator, smart:EQ, DSEQ) and traditional EQ plug-ins – be them all-digital parametric EQs or knobby analog gear emulations.
