Gibson Les Paul Custom 70s: Classic Rock!
New Gibson Les Paul Custom 70s in four fantastic finishes!
The Gibson Les Paul Custom 70s is a celebration of the guitar brand’s presence in its Music City location for 50 years. Available outside the Custom Shop, will this Les Paul Custom stack up well against its own competition?
Gibson Les Paul Custom 70s
This new Gibson Les Paul Custom 70s is obviously a marketing department’s dream, as 50 years is a perfect number to discuss, and the 1970s are hip once more. In part due to models like the Adam Jones 1979 signature Gibson and Epiphone runs from a few years ago. Plus ’70s Gibson models are gradually rising in price and becoming more desirable, especially the Les Paul Custom model.
Guitar heroes, including Randy Rhoads, Billy Duffy, and Doug Aldrich, have wielded this Norlin-era model on stages and recordings. Therefore, the fanbase for 70s Customs has grown rapidly over the last 20 years or so, as these fans have grown older and are now seeking out these 1970s specification models.
Seventies Style!
Crafted with a nod to its 1970s heritage, the newly reissued Les Paul Custom guitar features a mahogany body, a three-piece maple top, and a maple neck.
The body is outlined with five-ply binding on top and three-ply binding on the back, while the neck has a ’70s profile, a volute, and a bound ebony fretboard. The fretboard hosts 22 medium jumbo frets and is adorned with mother-of-pearl block inlays. The headstock, which is also bound, features the well-known mother-of-pearl Custom Split Diamond inlay.
The guitar’s classic look is completed by gold hardware, including an aluminum Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge, an aluminum Stop Bar tailpiece, and a set of Grover Rotomatics with Keystone button tuners. Smaller details include diamond-shaped Posi-Lok strap buttons, a five-ply pickguard, and era-appropriate “Witch Hat” control knobs.
These specifications aren’t specific to any one year of the 1970s; however, they do include many of the features that 70s Customs are known for.
This model comes fitted with a pair of Calibrated T-Type humbuckers that have individual volume and tone controls and a three-way pickup selector switch. They are hand-wired and use Orange Drop capacitors, so no modern printed circuit boards here.
Four Finish Options
They are available in Ebony, Tobacco Burst, Wine Red, and a version with a Buttercream top, all of which are the usual Gibson nitrocellulose finish. The latter one almost mimics a Mick Ronson-style sanded top in many ways, as it retains the black back and sides, etc.
Price & Availability
This new model is around two grand cheaper than the current Custom Shop model, and so if you are looking for a Gibson Les Paul Custom, it is the more affordable option. Pricing includes a Gibson hard case.
The Ebony, Tobacco Burst, Wine Red, and Buttercream are now priced at €3999 each and available at Thomann.
