Ernie Ball Music Man’s ongoing monthly series of Family Reserve models is always good for some nice bits of guitar candy. The 2021 July edition consists of four limited-run models: the StingRay RS in Governor Silver Burst, the Cutlass in Bullhead Blue Sparkle, a Bongo 5 HH and StingRay Specials. Let’s dive in!

BFR July 2021 Cutlass

This BFR July 2021 Cutlass model comes in a Bullhead Blue Sparkle finish and has a Silent Circuit to kill any potential hum. It comes fitted with a Music Man Floyd Rose double-locking tremolo and locking Schaller M6LA tuners. Nice.

This Cutlass has an alder body and highly-figured maple neck that’s loaded with 22 stainless steel frets. EBMM has opted for an HSS pickup configuration here, with a DiMarzio Custom Zebra humbucker at the bridge position, and two vintage-voiced Music Man custom-wound single-coils that are kept quiet by that Silent Circuit. Only 65 instruments will be available worldwide.

RRP – USD 2999

BFR July 2021 StingRay RS

Next up is the BFR July 2021 StingRay RS, finished in a Governor Silver Burst over a lightweight Okoume body. This guitar has a bolt-on figured maple neck loaded with an ebony fingerboard and White Pearl Atlante block inlays.

The bridge features a Music Man Modern Tremolo with vintage bent steel saddles, paired with Schaller locking tuners. The pickups consist of two custom-wound Music Man humbuckers. This model is limited to 75 pieces worldwide.

You’re also getting 22 high-profile stainless steel frets, along with a sculpted neck joint. Plus, those humbucking pickups are paired with an 18V preamp and an active 3-band EQ. This black and gold bass is limited to 106 pieces worldwide.

The final model is the EBMM BFR July 2021 Bongo 5 HH. This is another humbucker-equipped bass model, but this one sports a Crescendo White Sparkle gloss finish with gold hardware.

The basswood body combines with a roasted maple neck and fingerboard, with a 34″ scale length; the fretboard has an 11″ radius. This model has active electronics, with controls for master volume, blend, plus a 4-band stacked EQ. EBMM says only 66 units of this bass are being produced.
