Dean Guitars has come up with a sweet-looking new Colt Bigsby model that’s fitted with a piezo, vintage-style arched top and F-holes. Will this new semi-hollow body guitar get your world turning around?
Dean Colt Bigsby with Piezo in Vintage White
This new model for 2020 from Dean guitar seems inspired by the classic Gretsch White Falcon. Yet there are some subtle differences that make it stand out from the crowd. And a reasonable price point for a semi-hollow instrument, as well. Spec-wise this guitar is a semi-hollow fitted with two gold DMT (Dean Magnetic Technologies) humbucking pickups, a piezo pickup system, dual passive outputs and an original Bigsby bridge.
That’s a lot of useful things for players that want to experiment with sound. Well done Dean for cramming that all in to this one guitar! The Colt’s controls consist of two different volume controls, one for piezo and the other for the passive DMTs. Along with the master tone, that’s wired via a three-way pickup selector and another mini-toggle switch for bringing in each set of pickups in the following combinations: DMT, piezo or DMT and piezo together.
The Colt has a dual-action truss rod with a C-shape, 25.5″ scale-length maple set neck loaded with an ebony 16″ radius fretboard with pearloid block inlays and 22 tall and narrow frets. It uses a polymer white plastic 1 -11/16’’ width nut and a set of Gold Grover tuners keep everything in tune.
Sanctuary in tone
I love the fact they included the stereo/mono output! That makes this instrument more versatile for many situations and opens up experimentation with effects like delays (maybe use two?) or chorus. A nice and very welcome touch.
This is certainly a good-looking guitar. So if you can’t budget for something expensive and vintage, or a modern-day reissue of a classic, this Dean Colt Bigsby in Vintage White could be for you. The price does not include a case, which is a pity as a guitar like this will need protecting and it will be hard to get the right one. But you can buy an optional case or gig bag from Dean, so factor one into your budget if you are gigging.
