This week, the Frap Audio Dynamics 2806 finally landed with a bump. This advanced mono dynamics processing module offers a great deal of versatility in the 500-series format.

The 2806 prototype was originally showcased at NAMM 2020 and has since been refined with some minor changes. Let’s check out what makes it so different from other processing modules of this kind.

The Frap Audio Dynamics 2806

The Dynamics 2806 is a VCA-based module with independent compression and expansion sections. However, there are interactive features like the Priority switch that engages the expander only when there is no gain reduction present.

Each section has its own sidechain. While the expander monitors the VCA input signal, the compressor monitors the VCA output with feed-forward and feedback topologies respectively.

Furthermore, the REF switch changes the feedback point from pre to post-makeup. This gives you more precise control of your makeup gain. In addition, these sidechains also adapt to the articulation of the signal present.

The 2806 also has two time constant modes. While the default mode is more precise, it can introduce harmonic distortion if used too severely. Alternatively, Classic mode is less prone to distortion and can be used to add pumping effects.

The sidechain circuit has an external input with flexible routing options. You can trigger the compressor or expander, or merge the signal with the internal sidechain when triggering the compressor.

The signal is also filtered regardless of the routing. On the compressor, the Contour shelf control acts almost like a high-pass filter when turned all the way up. Meanwhile, the expander has its own LP and HP filters.

What’s more, you can monitor your sidechain signals and hear exactly what you’re doing.

Overall, the Dynamics 2806 is an absolute monster of a module. It’s capable of corrective or creative processing, and the parallel circuit allows you to be as aggressive or subtle as you want.

The only drawback is being limited to working with mono signals and at this price, one could surely expect a stereo-link feature.
