The HI POWER is the latest pedal from Crazy Tube Circuits and it is based on the Colorsound Power Boost and Hiwatt amp, as used by David Gilmour. It follows on from last year’s Unobtanium which also featured a classic pedal and amp combination. Though, that was a Klon and a Dumble-style amp in a pedal, and it proved to be one of their biggest-selling pedals in 2023.

Wish You Were Here

In the last few years, it has become a tradition for Crazy Tube Circuits to release a pedal + amp-in-a-box overdrive in December. This year the Athens-based pedal builder has chosen to release a pedal that replicates Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here tone. It is an all-all-analog dual booster/overdrive and should help players get close to Gilmour’s classic tones on that album.

Right and Left

The Right side is a faithful reproduction of Colorsound Power Boost/Overdriver circuits, whereas the Left side mimics either a 100W or 50W Hiwatt voiced clean/overdrive circuit. By combining the two, players can get those smooth lead lines with epic sustain, as used all over that Pink Floyd recording. Each side can be used independently as well, which makes this pedal super versatile.

They have made a  faithful re-creation of the Colorsound Power Boost by using BC184 transistors running at 18V DC, via an internal voltage booster and the use of a super versatile 2-band Baxandall EQ. Then for the HiWat recreation, they have given it a full EQ section, with a presence control, and a handy headroom toggle for simulating either a 100W or a more compressed 50W amp.

Crazy Tube Circuits has also added a passive series effects loop to connect pedals between the two sections or use them separately as independent effects.

Made in Greece

Based in Athens, this company is fast growing a reputation for making some very tasty pedals. This one has top-mounted jacks, so is easy to integrate into a pedalboard setup and it runs via a 9V DC, center negative power supply.

It could be another winner for the company, as the Unobtanium was such a big hit last year, and this looks et to follow in those footsteps as well.
