The Crazy Tube Circuits Sidekick JR is the compact successor to the original Sidekick from 2019. It offers three effect sections in the classic style of the 1980s: modulation, delay, and reverb. However, now with improved effect features, more DSP performance, and smaller housing.

The Crazy Tube Circuits Sidekick JR offers an even greater selection of sounds and algorithms than its predecessor. With modulation effects and algorithms that are inspired by classic effect pedals of the 80s.

Algorithms
The Ensemble algorithm delivers warm and gentle modulated chorus sounds, while Dimension makes the sound image appear more three-dimensional than a typical chorus. Finally, the Flanger algorithm inspired by a classic pedal creates a slow chorus with slight feedback for a more metallic sound.
Echo, Delay & Reverb in the Crazy Tube Circuits Sidekick JR
The echo/delay section delivers the popular, vivid sound of a tape delay with fresh tape, which it sends through a strong coloured preamp. Or the crystal-clear repetitions of a digital rack delay of the 1980s.
The reverb section of the pedal is inspired by the most famous rack devices of the era and offers two algorithm benches.
Bank A includes timeless Hall classics such as Plate, Spring, and Hall.
Whilst Bank B offers the more characteristic reverb sounds. Including Gated, Exciter (the well-known great hall algorithm of Crazy Tube Circuits with almost endless reflections and long reverberation time), and Shimmer.

Intelligent switching system
In order to offer the greatest possible flexibility in such a compact housing, Crazy Tube Circuits has developed an intelligent switching system.
The delay and reverb sections of the Sidekick JR work independently of each other and the modulation effect can be assigned to one of these sections by default. When using the separately available XT foot switch*.
The modulation section even becomes completely independent. It can be activated/deactivated individually (True Bypass).
In addition, the effect device offers the “Power-up Bypass/Engage Preset” function for the integrated foot switches. It allows users to select the mode that is then activated when connecting the power supply.
This is particularly useful in conjunction with remote-controlled pedal switches/loopers, as the power-up mode can be selected once and the pedal can then be controlled from the controller.
Verdict
As ever this latest effect from the team in Athens is a well-thought-out one and having more DSP power is always a bonus. It certainly offers a lot of value for money for one pedal.
