As Apple is gearing up to release its first consumer ARM-driven laptops this Fall, the amount of information “leaking” around the upcoming launch is building. The latest spiel, according to Twitter user/part-time Apple leaker @komiya_jp, is the new computers will cost far less than one would expect. Read on…

USD 799 for a Macbook?

The leaked prices are approximately USD 799 for the ARM-based MacBook and USD 1099 for the 13-inch ARM MacBook Pro. That’s USD 200 less than both the current MacBook Air and the 2020 MacBook Pro 13. You wouldn’t think Apple would be passing the savings it makes on Intel silicon down to its customers, but if @komiya_jp is to be believed, the company may indeed be Thinking Different.

Then again, Apple might simply settle for making the more profit out of ARM computers than it does now with Intel Macs. Which is okay business, to my understanding anyway.

Another interesting implication of this leak would be that Apple may resurrect the (12″) MacBook it discontinued, rather than carry on with an ARM MacBook Air. Commentators are also interpreting the leak to mean that the 13-inch ARM MacBook Pro will be a drop-in replacement for the current Intel model.

Both computers may be announced in October, according to this leaker, more specifically 27 October. Apple is expected to hold a special event presenting its first ARM laptops. Fingers crossed these leaked prices turn out to be true! That would be excellent news for music producers on a budget, whose choice is currently limited to the Mac Mini or an entry level iMac.

Of course, these and any other rumors ought to be treated as they are – unsubstantiated rumors. But we can dream, can’t we?
