Boss is about to expand its amp line-up with two new models that use its Tube Logic technology: the Nextone-Artist and Nextone-Stage. Using the combo format, these two look like a good bet for gigging guitarists. Now, Boss has just announced the rather useful-looking Waza Tube Amp Expander, and these two amps look like they pack in some equally clever ideas. After the success of its Katana amp range, could these new Nextone models be the next big thing?

Boss Nextone Amps

These new Boss Nextone amps both utilise four Class A/B analogue power amp types, combined with preamp modelling. The power amp sections are also available with 6V6, 6L6, EL84 and EL34 characteristics. They achieve their tone using Tube Logic technology, which Boss has developed with the aim of mimicking real valve amps. The range is two encompass two flavours, the Nextone-Artist 80W or Nextone-Stage 40W editions.

Both Nextine amps have a four-way switch on the front panel that allows you to choose your desired power amp setting. Each amp has two channels with Boost and Tone switches. There’s also a three-band EQ and presence control. Both amps use a single custom designed 12” speaker and should be light enough to make gigging less of a weightlifting tournament.

Nextone Editor

Boss has provided a piece of software, the Nextone Editor, to let you fine-tune the amp, including bias, sag and EQ settings. That makes this a very flexible amp for players that require a variety of tones. Those features also make it interesting for players who like to tinker. There is an optional GA-FC foot controller that can be used to control those parameters.

The amps themselves have built-in effects, including reverb, tremolo and delay. You also get a Line Out for microphone-free direct tone, a USB port to record straight to your DAW and a handy output power control to crank the amp at lower volumes. Those touches add to the flexibility of these amps.

On paper, they look pretty good and the official demo from Boss sounds decent, too. Both amps should be available by the end of November. I’m looking forward to hearing the reviews.

RRP – Nextone Stage GBP 439/EUR 499, Nextone Artist GBP615/EUR699
