Blackstar AMPED 1 is a 100-watt guitar amplifier in a compact pedal. It transforms your pedalboard, modeller or multi-effect device into a stage-level amplifier and ensures that you can take your sound with you wherever you go. Thanks to the power reduction to 1 watt and USB-C connectivity, it is equally at home in the studio as well.

The new Blackstar AMPED 1 was developed by the same team that has already designed the three award-winning DEPT 10 tube-based pedals. The manufacturer states that the special high-headroom design of the power amplifier delivers maximum performance and optimal sound at 8 or 16 ohms with each speaker arrangement. The power can also be reduced to 20 watts and 1 watt in order to make it super flexible.

Compact

This unit is small enough to fit into the gig bag and can serve as a pure amp for your other external devices as well as standalone. You have three voicings at your disposal: USA, UK and Flat. In addition to a 3-band EQ and a reverb with a freeze effect.

It also features a prominent RESPONSE button.  Here players can determine their personal amplifier tube favourite; KT88, 6L6, EL34, 6V6, EL84, or  LINEAR.

XLR Cabrig Output

Settings for the Reverb and the Effect Loop (serial or parallel assignable) can be further adjusted in the free Architect software. In order to faithfully reproduce the sound and feel of a mic’d guitar cabinet, Blackstar relies on its own digital replicas instead of IR.  The so-called Cabrig Simulator Technology, for the AMPED 1 has over 250 microphone and speaker combinations which be stored in one of the three onboard slots. For each speaker, the microphone type and axis as well as room microphones and a master EQ can be selected.

Portable Power

The good overall impression is rounded off by MIDI, foot-switchable presets, plus two 9-volt connections for your pedals, a line output/headphone connection and the possibility to use the device for USB recording. It also powers at all voltage which means it is great for musicians that travel internationally.

I like the price bracket and think it could make for a very useful tool for working guitarists, especially if you require a versatile, yet compact setup.
