Black Rooster Audio VPRE-73

 ·  Source: Black Rooster Audio

Have some vocals or other instrumental tracks in need of a vintage-driven warm-up? Good! Black Rooster Audio released a very affordable emulation of the classic Neve 1073 pre-amp. Though it’s not a one-on-one clone of the real thing, the VPRE-73 Silk Edition aims to deliver the same enhancements to the sound the Neve unit is known for producing.

To achieve this, BR Audio strived for an authentic emulation of the hardware’s preamp circuitry and transformers, as well as the high-shelf filter band – one of its defining features. Adding to the faithful sound are some modern amenities like SSE2 code optimizations, auto-adjusted oversampling for artifact-free and CPU-conscious sound quality, and support for high-resolution displays so the interface doesn’t look off on a Retina display.

Initial user reviews for VPRE-73 have been very positive, with users noting its subtle but audible effects on audio and describing the sound as warm and musical. The plug-in seems to have its own behavior and identity, though, including sweet spots that will look quite a bit different on an original 1073. All in all, this could be the go-to Neve preamp clone that won’t break the bank for many producers, and not just cash-tight ones. Speaking of the price…

Price and availability

The VPRE-73 is available in VST/AAX/AU formats on Windows and Mac computers as a limited time offer for only $19, down from a regular price of $29.
This offer will be available until the end of November, 2017. This is seriously good value for money, with a price tag that undercuts Neve 1073 emulations from companies like UAD, Steven Slate, and many others.
