Good news from BandLab Technologies! After acquiring the Cakewalk brand and assets from Gibson, the company is rebooting Sonar, a popular “alternative” DAW, as Cakewalk by BandLab. What’s more, the software is completely free to download for Windows.

Since BandLab has partnered up with Microsoft, Sonar a.k.a. Cakewalk will remain a Windows exclusive. So get Reaper or whatever if you are on a Mac. Owing to the Microsoft partnership, the DAW is getting pen, Bluetooth MIDI, multi-touch, and Surface Dial support throughout the user interface, which is dandy if you own present-day Microsoft tablets or computers.

Available as an “early access” download, Cakewalk by BandLab includes all core premium features of SONAR Platinum, such as the Skylight user interface, ProChannel modules, and 64-bit mix engine. BandLab says there’s an “aggressive” feature development roadmap for the software ahead and it will remain completely free to use as to “ensure anyone, regardless of their resources, technology or stage in their career can have access.”

In other words, this is a fully-featured DAW that’s going free — wonderful news, indeed!

You can read more about Cakewalk and grab the download over at BandLab’s.
