JHS Pedals 3 Series Screamer is the latest addition to the ‘budget boutique’ pedal line. It’s based on the Ibanez TubeScreamer, so a well loved circuit. But does the world really need another ‘Screamer though?

$99 Screamer

This latest JHS Pedals 3 Series pedal is made in Kansas City, MO and offers players the chance to buy a high quality pedal at a bargain USD $99. That takes a lot of work, especially if you pay your workforce a proper wage, and also use high quality components. Therefore, I really have to applaud JHS Pedals and their head honcho Josh Scott on that front.

JHS 3 Series – Screamer

Essential Tone

The 3 Series Screamer is essentially the JHS Tube Screamer “Strong Mod” in a plain white wrapper. This means you get the tones, without the high price tag and fancy packaging/artwork. JHS has designed the Screamer to give you more, stating that it has “clean headroom, better usability as a boost, more versatile drive and tone controls as well as a more pleasing frequency response.”

TubeScreamer +/-

The original TubeScreamer design is based around three simple controls Volume, Tone and Drive. JHS has added a +/- mini toggle switch for extra versatility that changes the clipping. Up is asymmetrical clipping, a strong mod clipping. Down is symmetrical clipping for stock TS9 TS808 style. The pedal is run via 9V DC negative centre power and consumes 12mA. So it will sit nicely on just about any pedalboard setup.

A bold move?

It takes a lot of belief in your product to add yet another TubeScreamer-style pedal into an already crowded marketplace. I feel JHS may actually do pretty well with this one though, as that price point is key. Then factor in that it is made in the USA and uses nothing but high quality components. So potentially, it is a winner.

RRP – USD 99

I don’t think the JHS 3 series pedals sound very good, they’re just fair, even at that price.
