Free multi-band drive plugin: HY-Plugins new HY-MBDrive
Free plugins can be limiting and minimal. However, you can never have enough saturation-style plugins in your arsenal. Here HY-Plugins are offering a free saturation plugin, but with a surprising amount of features. Building on their proven collection of free plugins, this is a no-brainer. Unfortunately, the one catch is that only Windows users can benefit.
Essentially this is a three-band saturation plugin offering level, drive amount, crossover, pan and stereo width control for each band. There are also 5 types of drive algorithm to independently chose from for each band which isn’t common. These are labeled: drive, half, full, clip and lofi, where ‘half’ and ‘full’ relate to waveform rectification. To complete the story there is an output ‘clip’ process too.
This all looks good and should be fun to use. However, being a Mac user I can’t test it out, if you’ve had any experience with this, please comment below. Areas to watch out for when testing is the mono compatibility of their stereo enhancement, and whether the cross-overs induce unwanted phase.
The plugin is a free download for Windows in 32 and 64-bit VST formats. It is also included in the ‘All’ bundle pack, with HY-Delay, HY-Filter, HY-Lofi, and HY-Phaser.
