The Audeze MM-520 is the latest open-back planar design in the range of headphones created with Grammy award-winning engineer Manny Marroquin.
Using the existing design of the MM-500 as a foundation, the MM-520 expands on this by incorporating the SLAM (Symmetric Linear Acoustic Modulator) technology from Audeze for precise low-end articulation and detail across the stereo field.

The idea behind the MM-520 is to provide a set of headphones you can trust to deliver results that translate onto any playback system, from AirPods and laptop speakers to larger sound systems used in clubs and music venues. With the implementation of SLAM, the air pressure inside the earcups is optimized to improve the overall transparency and the low-end response.
This is achieved without changing the characteristically neutral mid-range profile of the MM-500, so Audeze has not strayed too far from the winning formula. The design of the MM-520 uses ultra-precise 90mm planar magnetic drivers with Ultra-Thin Uniforce diaphragms and Fazor phase optimization for accurate stereo-imaging and the lowest possible distortion levels.
In addition, the MM-520 is a high-sensitivity device with a low impedance rating, allowing you to get optimum performance levels from the headphones when connected to consumer-grade outputs on laptops or professional studio headphone preamplifiers. Also, the memory foam earpads have been upgraded for maximum comfort, and they connect to the earcups magnetically for convenience.
Overall, the MM-520 adds value without pushing up the price tag, compared to the MM-500. The Marroquin Series sits just below the middle of the Audeze range. So, while it’s a stretch to call a nearly $2000 pair of headphones affordable, there are clearly levels to this game, and the nearest competitor, the Dan Clark Audio E3, has a different profile and costs $500 more.
