This week’s Guitar Journal is all about the Jim Irsay Guitar Collection, which went up for auction over the weekend at Christie’s Auction House in New York. It smashed auction records and far exceeded the auction house’s expectations, creating some of the most expensive guitars in the world!

Almost $94 Million at Christie’s

I originally wrote about the sale back in November 2025, when it was first announced, and the auction finished over the weekend, so we now know the final sale prices. The gavels came down hard at Christie’s last week, closing the book on one of the most remarkable collections of sports, music, and literary memorabilia ever assembled.

The collection, curated by the late Indianapolis Colts owner and CEO Jim Irsay, brought in a staggering $93.65 million over three days, from Thursday through Saturday.

Obviously, the Guitar Collection is what we are focusing on, and it includes some of the largest sums ever paid for celebrity guitars at auction. With plenty of record-breaking sales of some iconic instruments over the three-day event.

The final tally obliterated Christie’s pre-auction estimate of $40 million. All 44 lots of the Jim Irsay Collection: Hall of Fame sold, soaring 373 percent past their lowest projections.

The main guitar auction can be viewed in the video below, and the amounts of money involved are staggering. To the point of being obscene.

Irsay famously insisted that his world-class guitar collection shouldn’t just sit encased in glass; he wanted the historic instruments to be played. However, given the astronomical sums shelled out in New York, totaling an astonishing $84,091,350 for the guitar collection alone, it is highly unlikely the new owners will be taking these six-strings down to the local pub.

The auction proved that while rock and roll may have roots in working-class rebellion, its artifacts are now firmly established as blue-chip assets for the ultra-wealthy. In fact, items from Irsay’s collection now account for five of the top 10 most expensive guitars ever sold.

The Black Strat

Leading the pack was David Gilmour’s “Black Strat”, which sold for a monumental $14.55 million. Irsay originally purchased the instrument in 2019 for $3.97 million. Close behind was Jerry Garcia’s “Tiger” guitar, which Irsay acquired in 2002. It smashed its $1 million to $2 million estimate, eventually selling for $11.56 million.

Cobain’s Mustang

Rounding out the top three was the Fender Mustang used by Kurt Cobain in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video, fetching $6.90 million.

Clapton’s Guitars

Two iconic instruments from Eric Clapton also secured spots in the all-time top 10. The 000-42 acoustic guitar played during his famous 1992 MTV Unplugged set commanded $4.10 million, while his 1964 Gibson SG Standard, affectionately known as “The Fool,” sold for $3 million.

Derek Trucks

I loved that Derek Trucks was seen playing Jerry Garcia’s “Tiger” guitar live on stage with his band the next day. He made it sound amazing, but then he can make any guitar sound great, as he is such an impressive player.

Jim Irsay

The landmark auction comes in the wake of Irsay’s death in May 2025 at the age of 65.

As of January, the FBI is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, specifically in connection to his relationship with addiction specialist Dr. Harry Haroutunian. It’s been an interesting weekend for guitar sales, and the legacy of Jim Irsay will certainly live on.

What Next?

I’m interested to see what happens to all these well-known guitars in the coming year. As they are now spread across a range of new owners, and no longer in a collection. I’m hoping we see more guitarists play them live, as Derek Trucks did over the weekend. As these instruments are iconic, it would be a shame for them to sit in bank vaults, unplayed and unused, rather than creating music.

I also guess that at some point in the future, these guitars will go back on sale, so will we keep seeing prices soar?

I’m also sure we could see some highly limited-edition recreations of the guitars (yet again) by the guitar brands that built them. The chance to recreate more super-accurate copies of these iconic guitars will no doubt be too much temptation for the various guitar brands, so that could also be on the horizon.

Let us know what you think of the whole auction and the crazy-high prices for these guitars in the comments below.
