The Friedman Sir-Compre pedal is an optical compressor with the added ability to dial in some gain when needed. Designed by Dave Friedman, who has an ear for these things, this pedal was first announced back at the NAMM Show earlier this year but is now finally available to buy.
Gain
The Sir-Compre is an optical compressor with a relatively simple layout. The only control that stands out is the ‘Tight’ knob, which is used to control the bass frequencies and make them, well, tighter. Other than that, the unit has the knobs you would expect on a pedal-format compression effect: Vol, Gain, Comp and Treble. But Mr Friedman has also designed it with the ability to dial in a bit of dirt. It needs an 18V power supply and can’t be run off a battery, which could be an issue for some players.

To add some drive, push the gain control up; the sound actually gets quite dirty, but in a nicely musical way. The drive aspect is not too over the top, but there’s a satisfying crunch that makes it stand out from more traditional ‘clean’ studio-type compressors. There are other companies that already offer similar pedals, like Pigtronix with the Philosophers Tone, for example. But Friedman has been gaining a reputation for making some great products, and since being announced at Summer NAMM the Sir-Compre has had a lot of interest from players, myself included.
My only gripe is the price. It’s pretty expensive, so go try one out before you part with your cash.
