Superbooth 2021: Cherry Audio shoots for Jupiter and hits Mercury

Released to coincide with Superbooth Cherry Audio announces Mercury-4 softsynth, their emulation of the classic Roland Jupiter-4 synthesizer.

Through the mysterious teaser videos, I think we got the idea that Cherry Audio was heading for Jupiter although I wasn’t expecting them to call it Mercury-4. The Roland Jupiter-4 was a very cool looking and edgy sounding polyphonic analogue synthesizer of the late 1970s. It had 4 voices that could also be stacked into a massive 4 oscillator sound mountain. It had a low and high pass filter, 2 envelopes and a single LFO. At the end was an Ensemble/Chorus effect. It took some of the old organ vibes with it in the row of preset sound buttons along the front edge beneath the keyboard and would sound nothing like the “Piano” and “Brass” suggestions that were printed there.
The arpeggiator was really good and, apparently, was used in the Duran Duran classic “Rio”. Cherry Audio says that Greg Hawkes from The Cars used one a lot back in the day and when they asked him to try this emulation he said it “sounds just like my old Jupiter!” and you can’t argue with that. On the website is a Human League cover of Darkness using the Mercury-4 and that sound bloody perfect to me.

For the Mercury-4 the polyphony has been increased to 16-voices and they’ve tuned them a little bit, they’ve increased the patch storage to infinity, added velocity and MPE support. You’ll also find a model of the Roland Space Echo built into the front panel – fantastic! You get 400 presets, drift control to add authenticity, unison mode, chord memory, uniquely Jupiter-4 arpeggio section and a lot of fun.
Another great synth from Cherry Audio for $39 for macOS and Windows. Cherry Audio does not have a booth at Superbooth but you can download it now and play with it in your Berlin hotel bedroom.
