Since October 10, 2024, the AlphaTheta XDJ-AZ has been on the market and has established itself as a fixture in the professional all-in-one DJ system segment. Though it resembles the popular Pioneer DJ setup with the CDJ-3000 and DJM-A9, its chassis conceals a redesigned console offering an impressive overall package in terms of appearance and functionality. With its range of connection options, software integrations, and well-designed operating concept, the XDJ-AZ is ideal for club DJs, mobile performers, and home studios. I had the opportunity to test it out in my studio.

Key Features

  • The XDJ-AZ is a four-channel standalone DJ console with a full-fledged club layout
  • It combines design elements from the CDJ-3000 and DJM-A9 into an all-in-one system
  • Rekordbox integration, streaming functions, and wireless SonicLink monitoring are included
  • A 10.1-inch touchscreen ensures clarity, speed, and comfortable operation
  • Despite its high quality and numerous features, the XDJ-AZ remains below the price of a comparable setup made up of individual components

The Brand in Transition: From Pioneer DJ to AlphaTheta

The story behind the name change is well known. In the case of the XDJ-AZ, however, it’s clear that this wasn’t just a cosmetic change. The console exemplifies AlphaTheta’s new direction: more integration, flexibility, and future-proofing. The manufacturer remains true to the familiar layout but transfers it to a platform that allows for modern DJ needs, such as streaming, cloud synchronization, and wireless monitoring. It also specifically addresses these needs.

Although much of it looks familiar, the underlying philosophy is different. Instead of focusing on individual hardware components, AlphaTheta has taken a systemic approach with the XDJ-AZ. Everything you need for a performance is combined in a single device without compromising quality or usability. The company’s internal structure also reflects this change: The XDJ-AZ development team consists of many former Pioneer engineers who are now expanding the product portfolio in a new setting. However, does this adequately address the concerns of the users?

Unboxing: Club Standard on a Single Interface

A key selling point of the XDJ-AZ is its ergonomics. Anyone familiar with Pioneer DJ setups in clubs will feel right at home. The jog wheels are identical to those on the CDJ-3000, and the mixer layout is nearly identical to the DJM-A9’s. This allows the console to be seamlessly integrated into existing setups or used as a full-fledged alternative to more expensive individual components.

AlphaTheta has not sacrificed any of the practical nuances. The faders run smoothly, and the performance pads respond promptly, offering more creative control than ever before. DJs who work with cues, loops, or key shifting often will benefit from a clear workflow that can be reliably operated even under stress. The XDJ-AZ is therefore not just a tool, but a reliable partner for demanding performances.

The XDJ-AZ Touchscreen as the Control Center

At the center of the XDJ-AZ is the new 10.1-inch touchscreen. This display is easy to read and responds quickly and accurately to input. This makes navigating playlists, waveforms, and mixer settings much more intuitive than with previous models. This is very nice – and extremely important when performing in front of an cheering audience.

In addition, numerous hardware functions that would otherwise be distributed across physical switches can be controlled directly via the display. This allows you to centrally manage crossfader assignments, effect parameters, and microphone settings. The layout remains clear thanks to AlphaTheta’s well-designed user interface.

Four Decks for One Stick – The Flexible Heart of the System

A key feature of the XDJ-AZ is its full four-deck functionality in standalone mode. Unlike many controllers, which only have two physical channels and switch decks “virtually,” you can access four complete decks with a single USB stick – no external player necessary. Very nice! If desired, decks three and four can be controlled via external CDJs or turntables because the necessary connections and Pro DJ Link are available.

Switching between decks is done via two large, clearly labeled deck select buttons above the jog wheels. Switching works reliably. However, color-coded deck assignments would have been helpful. Although you can track the status on the display, visual markers on the jog wheel LED ring or color modes would have been an elegant addition. Hopefully, AlphaTheta will improve this with a firmware update.

Performance Pads: Creativity Meets Control

The eight backlit performance pads on each side set new standards in creativity. In addition to classic hot cues, various modes are available, such as Gate Cue, Beat Loop 2, Key Shift, and Beat Jump 2. The latter allows you to jump up to 64 beats forward or backward – a particularly useful feature for DJs who work with loops or want to quickly structure tracks.

Triggering feels precise, and thanks to the new displays in the jog wheel’s inner ring and the status display on the central touchscreen, it’s always clear which pad mode is active. Even complex tasks, such as pitch changes, can be controlled intuitively via the pads. AlphaTheta has integrated this feature into the overall system particularly well, which will surely prove advantageous during live performances.

The Audio Quality is Professional Grade

High-quality 32-bit D/A converters from ESS Technology, which deliver excellent output in other AlphaTheta flagship models, are responsible for the sound. The XDJ-AZ delivers detailed, transparent sound with plenty of headroom and minimal background noise, whether via the master, booth, or the two microphone inputs.

Even at high volumes, the sound remains stable and powerful. It’s also nice that the three-band master EQ can be used independently of the channel EQ, offering another option for shaping the sound. Although features such as a separate booth EQ or microphone phantom power are missing, there are two balanced microphone inputs with a 3-band EQ. This is particularly advantageous for event or wedding DJs.

Effects: Everything You’d Find in a Club – and More

The effects sections are clearly based on the DJM-A9, the standard mixer for clubs. Both Beat FX and Sound Color FX have a similar design and can be assigned to channels, microphones, the crossfader, or the master. The Mobius function is particularly striking, offering new possibilities for breaks and building tension. It will likely quickly become a favorite among experimental DJs.

Control is quick and precise thanks to dedicated buttons and knobs. Additionally, FX Frequency Assignment allows you to select the frequency ranges affected by the effect, a feature consistent with the DJM series. The XDJ-AZ is therefore ideal for creative mixes with character. It’s also really fun to use!

With SonicLink, AlphaTheta introduces new wireless technology with latencies of less than 10 milliseconds. When used with the HDJ-F10 headphones, it creates a virtually wireless setup that is ideal for DJs who prefer freedom of movement or want to avoid cable clutter. Pairing is done via a button on the front, and the headphones automatically connect to the integrated wireless link.

Although SonicLink cannot yet be used for speakers, it offers a compelling alternative to classic jack connections for monitoring. Best of all, classic connections remain intact and work in parallel, which is ideal for B2B situations without cable clutter.

Streaming and Cloud Functions of the XDJ-AZ

In addition to classic USB playback, the XDJ-AZ supports modern streaming via Beatport, Apple Music, and Cloud Direct Play via Dropbox. The latter function allows cloud-based playlists to be read directly on the device, eliminating the need for a computer. Thanks to Wi-Fi and LAN connectivity, the connection is fast and stable.

However, it’s worth noting that other platforms, such as Tidal, Amazon Music, and SoundCloud, are currently missing and can only be accessed via workarounds (i.e., a connected computer). Additionally, some streaming functions are limited. For example, you have to log in each time you start the app, which is annoying. Nevertheless, AlphaTheta is clearly moving in the direction of providing access to music regardless of where it is stored.

The XDJ-AZ’s innovative features include the new cue functions Link Cue and Smart Cue. Link Cue allows you to preview tracks directly in the browser by tapping the waveform. This saves time when setting up a set and helps plan transitions during live performances. Smart Cue, on the other hand, automates the setting of hot cues and remembers the last played position.

These features may seem insignificant at first, but they significantly impact the workflow. They reduce manual processes, speed up the workflow, and allow you to focus more on the creative side of DJing. That’s exactly what we want on stage.

Design, Transport, and Weight

The XDJ-AZ weighs 13.5 kg and measures 89.5 × 50.4 × 13.3 cm. While it’s not exactly lightweight, for a console with this level of equipment, it’s reasonably portable. The overall build quality is extremely solid. Even though some surfaces are plastic, the device looks and feels high-quality, as expected at this price point. However, I would recommend a hard case for regular transport.

Compared to modular setups, there is no need for complicated cabling of individual devices. This saves time and space, making the XDJ-AZ attractive for mobile use – as long as you are aware of its weight. For your information: You can’t quickly strap it to your back or transport it on a bicycle’s luggage rack.

Inputs and Outputs

The rear panel of the hardware offers two balanced microphone connections (jack/XLR combo socket), two stereo line/phone inputs (RCA) with a ground connection, two balanced jack outputs (L/R), a stereo output for Master 2 (RCA), and two XLR outputs (L/R) for Master 1. The rear panel also has a power plug connection, a USB-C port for connecting a computer, an Ethernet port, and an on/off switch.

The headphone jacks (one large, one small) and the SonicLink pairing button are conveniently located on the front of the device for easy operation. The two USB ports for USB flash drives and other USB data storage devices are located on the top right of the console. Unfortunately, the hardware doesn’t have a send/return path to integrate external effects devices to my setup, which I would really like to do.

Who is the XDJ-AZ Suitable For?

The XDJ-AZ is aimed at a broad audience. It’s perfect for DJs who are used to the Pioneer/AlphaTheta workflow and don’t want to give it up in their home studio or on tour. It is also suitable for aspiring professional DJs looking to enter the world of professional club technology, especially mobile DJs, who will appreciate the microphone section, compact format, and flexible source selection.

However, depending on your musical repertoire, especially if you play pop, rap, or rock music, the limited streaming services may be a bigger factor. The price is 3,299.00 € and this is “justified” given the number of features and solid hardware it offers, as well as compared to the company’s other hardware products.

Conclusion: The XDJ-AZ from AlphaTheta is the Logical Next Step

With the XDJ-AZ, AlphaTheta has not released a new jack-of-all-trades but has rather combined the best of its history into one device. Perfect, and just as it should be. If you want club workflow, sound quality, creative tools, and modern technology combined in one device, the XDJ-AZ is for you. You can start using it right after unpacking the hardware without having to read the manual first.

The missing features (compatibility to streaming providers, minor menu inconsistencies, and frequent logins) can be added and fixed with a software update. Nevertheless, it’s a console that doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel but rather delivers what DJs have been asking for years: reliability, versatility, and intuitive operation. This makes the XDJ-AZ the obvious choice for anyone looking for a powerful, professional, and future-proof all-in-one player.
