Mr Zakk Wylde is not a subtle man, oh no. He’s more of a huge hulking great mountain of a player and his latest addition to the Wylde Audio roster is the Barbarian. The Barbarian is an SG-inspired solid-bodied electric guitar, and it is very metal indeed.

Barbarian

The Barbarian is still at the development stage with no official release date set. The specification is also a little vague at the moment. It looks to be a solid mahogany-bodied guitar with a maple neck which sports an ebony fretboard and those huge square fret markers made of some sort of mother of pearl type material and 6000 fret wire jumbo frets.

It’s a hard-tail guitar with a traditional tail piece with an ABR/Tune-O-Matic adjustable bridge, so I imagine it will hold tuning very well. The hardware has been confirmed as being supplied by TonePros.

The onboard electronics appear to be a set of active EMG 81 & 85 humbucker pickups with three control knobs, presumably made up of two volume and a master tone control, and a toggle switch. That would be very typical for Zakk Wylde’s guitar specifications and well suited to a style of playing featuring lots of clear, solid tones that cut through heavy amp gain, retaining clarity at high volume.

Harmonics

Zakk has a very distinctive pinched harmonics style with very fast chicken pickin’ runs, usually in pentatonic modes up and down the fretboard at high speed. He loves a good clear sound with clarity for note definition when playing fast and through lots of gain. I get the impression that these new Barbarian prototypes will be able to deal with this style playing. The specification suggest that is his aim.

The guitars leaked by Wylde Audio appear to be in the following finishes: red, natural and sunburst, although there is no indication that these finishes have been finalised for production. Red is a very traditional Gibson SG colour, so it would make sense that one of these will be a red model. It would be cool if he does a bull’s eye or vertigo finish as well, just like on his signature Les Paul Customs.
