In recent years, Warm Audio has shown us time and time again that there is no piece of gear too rare or obscure for them to put onto their production line. What’s more, as a manufacturer, Warm is always looking for ways to improve, as they did with their line of 1176-style compressors.
Warm Audio WA-CX24
The original AKG C24 represents the pinnacle of late-1950s recording technology, a tube condenser that uses two mono CK12 capsules (from the C12) that provide stereo XY or mid-side recording capabilities. Its sound is, of course, legendary. A perfectly balanced combination of natural, clearly detailed upper mids and highs, and warm low-end, making it an incredible vocal mic.
The beauty of the mic’s design is that you can select different pickup patterns for each of the two capsules and adjust their angles by 180 degrees. Well, Warm Audio has gone to town and recreated every tiny detail of this elaborate tube design in the new WA-CX24. From the two brass CK12-style capsules and T14 TAB-Funkenwerk USA output transformers to the 12AY7 tube and the solid brass body, every part has been carefully selected.
With the Warm Audio WA-CX24, modern studios have the potential to capture ambient recordings with that classic, natural tube sound. You can use it on a vocal or string ensemble, a dynamic grand piano performance, intricate percussion, or anything you want to capture in detail using XY, mid-side, or Blumlein mic techniques.
The included dual-pattern power supply lets you select cardioid, omnidirectional, or figure-8 patterns with each capsule, and there are six intermediate patterns, allowing you to experiment to get the best sound in your space. Overall, the WA-CX24 is an exciting potential addition to your mic locker, and the relatively reasonable price makes it all the more of an attractive prospect.
