Not content with reintroducing the old string synth to a 21st century audience, Waldorf now deliver the Streichfett String Synthesizer in plug in form. Now you can choose to save some desktop space and go in the box.
The hardware was lauded at its 2014 launch as an affordable, compact string synth. Aficionados of the string synth sound got very enthusiastic about it, praising its bang for buck. The plugin looks to carry on that tradition.
How Does It Compare?
The new plugin version of the Streichfett String Synthesizer is virtually identical in feature set. Those familiar with the front panel of the hardware unit will be instantly at home. Everything is just a flat rotary or clickable link. This makes the UI clean and understandable. Two tabs at the top allow you to access presets and settings.
Streichfett Features
The String section is fully polyphonic and is accompanied by an 8 voice Solo section. This Solo section can be assigned to the upper or lower parts of the keyboard or layered with the String section. The Phaser is very much the effect of choice with string synths, so it is no surprise that the Striechfett has one. It also has a beautiful Ensemble mode which adds depth, and a reverb rounds up the regular effects section. The Strings section also benefits from a modulating Animate effect.

The Solo Section
The Solo section of the Streichfett String Synthesizer features five tones that bear no resemblance to their names. This is another nod to the string synths of old, and the Streichfett is all the better for it. These tones mix wonderfully well with the Strings section.
Other Streichfett Features
The plugin comes with 16 programmable presets. It also features a continuously scalable UI. Whatever your screen size, the Streichfett will be nice and clear. The inclusion of this alone gives me hope that they might fix the UI of the PPG 3V soon.
Streichfett String Synthesizer Price and Requirements
The Waldorf Streichfett String Synthesizer is available as a VST2/VST3/AU/AAX plugin and requires Windows 7 and above (Intel or AMD) and macOS 10.14 and above (Intel or M1). It will retail for €99 inc. VAT but in celebration of Waldorf’s 33rd anniversary, it will be available on Waldorf’s website for €33 for a limited time.
