W.A. Production makes affordable and satisfying plug-ins for modern styles. Their latest release is Satyrus, a distortion plug-in with 8 types of the stuff and a clean, sleek user interface.
W.A. Production Satyrus distortion plug-in
Satyrus is quite simple to wield. There are Input and Output gain controls, a realtime curve and amplitude visualizer, and a bunch of presets you can browse from a drop-down menu. You can also save your own presets and switch between mono or stereo operation.
The plug-in features 8 different distortion modes: Power, Fresnel, Hyperbolic Overdrive, Logarithmic Coloration, Circular Projection, Cosine Modulation, and Satyric Crunch. These should cover the ground between distortion, crunch and saturation quite nicely. According to the developers, Hyperbolic Overdrive and Circular Projection lend themselves extra well to cinematic effects like shots and explosions, or synth layers like pads and stabs.
Satyrus seems to pack plenty of punch for the money. I like it when distortion plug-ins thread beyond the usual tube, tape and transistor crunch and into straight-up digital obliteration. You have to mix things up every once in a while to come up with cool new noises.
Price and availability
Satyrus is on sale, priced USD 7.99 down from USD 39.90. The plug-in is available in 64-bit VST, AU, and AAX formats for computers running Windows 7 or later and macOS 10.7 or later. AAX requires Pro Tools 11 or higher. A demo version can be downloaded from the product page.
