The bundle comprises only two plug-ins – but what plug-ins they are! First is the Native Bus Compressor, SSL’s in-house emulation of its own legendary mix bus compressor. It comes straight out of the kitchen, sounding and behaving as authentic as it reasonably can. Strap it on your master bus, tweak the controls to get the needle moving just a tiny bit without audible pumping, and you have that sound. It’s what most mix engineers have kept doing for the last three decades or so. No need to tinker with perfection!
SSL Bus Comp
Second is the SSL Console Channel Strip plug-in. It brings the EQ, compressor, and expander/gate sections from each channel of the SSL 4000 G and E series consoles into your DAW. What I love about SSL gear is its sheer workhorse quality – the features are straightforward and the audio stays clean, but musical. If you know what you are doing, it lets you accomplish exactly what you want without getting in the way with prominent coloration, peculiar sweet spots and tricky behaviours. Some think that’s sterile, others call it hi-fi. Thing is, even if you prefer a vintage aesthetic, you must acknowledge that not all music is supposed to sound like it was recorded at Abbey Road in the 60s.
