Strymon Canoga Vintage-Voiced Silicon Fuzz
All analog fuzz tones from Strymon
The Canoga is based on an analog fuzz built by Strymon founder Gregg Stock, and now it is part of their all-analog A Series.
Canoga
The Strymon Canoga is an analog silicon fuzz with a very simple control layout: Drive and Level. It could be one of Strymon’s simplest designs to date. Because it is a silicon fuzz, it works best as the first pedal in an effect chain, and the guitar volume control will do most of the work for you with a pedal like this one.
Unlike most of Stymon’s effects, this one has no MIDI, no USB, no firmware updates, and zero digital processing. Making it a real back-to-basics effect for them.
From Prototype to Product
Most silicon Fuzz Face-style pedals follow a simple formula, and this new one came from a set of prototypes that sat untouched for seven years. Now, Strymon has decided to release it, and it makes sense, as they are building the A Series of analog effects, which includes the Fairfax, and fuzz is one of the ultimate analog guitar effect pedals.
Super Simple
The design is simple, but it includes modern updates such as true bypass and a status LED, and it can be powered by an external power brick. All things that vintage fuzz pedals tend to lack.
Strymon has also added an internal jumper that sets the pedal’s initial power-up state to bypass or engage.
I do love silicon fuzz pedals, and I own many of them, but I’m not sure this would convince me to buy another one. I’m guessing Strymon fans will love it, and that vintage silicon fuzz purists will try to hate it.
It looks neat, but it may be a bit late to the party.
