Solid State Logic expands its popular line of audio interfaces with a new entry model, the SSL 1, an ideal starter solution for home recording.

SSL first launched its USB audio interfaces back in 2020, and since then, the range has become one of the strongest competitors to the Focusrite Scarlett series, offering a slightly different design philosophy, which certainly caught on among musicians.

Like the rest of the range, the SSL 1 allows 32-bit 192 kHz recording and compatibility with macOS, Windows, and iOS. Its 2×2 I/O configuration offers a single XLR mic preamp with 4K console emulation mode and an instrument/line channel which automatically switches to Hi-Z mode when you plug in your guitar.

More Information

The SSL 1 can run on either USB bus power or 5V DC power, so you can choose the best option for your setup. On the main control panel, you have access to your main stereo monitor output level, the headphones level, and you can use the mix button to choose between an input or post-DAW output monitor feed.

In addition, the SSL 1 is equipped with loopback functionality for streaming. This allows you to capture any signal being played through the system in your DAW or send it to your streaming software. However, in SSL’s range of audio interfaces, there is only MIDI I/O implemented from the SSL 2+ upward, so this is a consideration if you’re using older electronic gear with your DAW.

Could the SSL 1 have been more compact? Perhaps, but it surely makes up for this with a very compact price tag of just over $150. Overall, when you consider the quality of the mic pre, conversion, and headphone preamp, you can’t really expect much more from an audio interface in this price range.
